CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“So there is no way for the average person to hide their thoughts?” Orion rested his elbows on his knees. All he wanted to do was go to bed…preferably with someone. His dick hadn’t got the memo that Hastings was after him, or if it had, it thought sleeping was a dumb way to kill time when he could be fucking.

Or it was simply because he was only a few feet from Jacob.

“No, but it’s not that easy to read the impressions either. Things that are touched a lot have multiple layers of impressions. It’s like trying to identify every fingerprint on a doorknob after it’s been touched by one hundred people. Some, those near the surface or those made with strong emotion, will be clearer than others,” Ethan Lumin said. “I want to know how he manages to be around so many people. It’s too easy to drown in the impressions.”

“I’ll make sure I ask,” Orion said without humor.

Jacob pressed his lips together and nodded. “So that could be used against him?”

“Yes. It’s possible he wears a dampener of some kind…has he ever caught a fox?”

Jacob glanced at him, and Orion shook his head. “He might be using fox magic?”

“He could’ve made a charm out of—”

“If he’s keeping trophies, they could be imbued with shifter magic? What benefit does that have?” Everest asked.

“That depends on the shifter.” Jacob sighed and sat back.

“Foxes are magical dampeners,” Ethan said. “He may be using that in public to reduce his own magic. It’s easier for me now Axel is my familiar.”

“Which then makes it harder for others to work out what he is.”

“Or he might be lying about what he can do,” Everest said. He’d know since he’d lied about being a fire witch.

“That much harder for a witch than it sounds.” Jacob glanced at Everest. “I can’t pretend to be a water witch. And binding a shifter amplifies a witch’s power but drains the shifter because the connection is only one way. It’s not a natural bond.”

“Shifters can also bind witches. There was a case a year or so ago.” Orion had looked at the case, but only because it had involved binding. In the end, it had been a couple of shifters wanting to get back at witches for historic bindings while at the same time wanting more power.

It always came back to power. For some people, it didn’t matter what they had; it was never enough. He wasn’t sure if Hastings wanted to rule the world or if he liked the much more personal power trip of watching others suffer.

“I don’t know what else I can tell you,” Ethan said.

“For the moment, it’s enough. If I need something else, I’ll be in contact. Answer your damn phone.”

“It’s the middle of the night.”

“Yes, and next time someone might die because you don’t want to take a call.”

“I offered to help. I don’t need to.” Ethan’s voice hardened.

“It’s called doing the right thing before your father and his friends fuck us all over,” Orion snapped.
